I loved The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate once I got a chapter in. Once I got there I couldn't put it down even if I tried. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is a story about a girl named Calpurnia who, supported by her grand father who cupped the tender flame of her love of science and fanned it into a blaze. To the point of when her parents tried to snuff it, they found it was not a candle that they expected, but a bonfire. The book takes place in Texas right as the auto mobile (the grandfather fought in the civil war on the confederacy) is coming out. Calpurnia Tate is smack in the middle of six brothers, three older, three younger. She however is the only one who knows the grandfather who at the end of the book slips and says that she is his only grandchild. Because (it does not explain this) she is the only one like him and the only one who is at home with him. The grandfather teaches Calpurnia how to be a scientist and explore the world around her. Through their searches they find a small mutant (with Calpurnia's spelling "mootant") of the Hairy Vetch, they send pictures to the Smithsonian and find that there is no match and this is a new Hairy Vetch. She and her grandfather then have their own breed of plant named after them at the end.

All ages could enjoy it and I think all ages would enjoy it as it is funny and just a well written book. Any gender could enjoy it. It is a classic and a fine piece of literature. There is a second book, The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate which I have not read, but plan to I have heard is very good.
Written by a boy age 12.

I was asking friends for recommendations for books for my granddaughters. A friend from Spain mentioned this book which I had not heard of before. So I got one for me, too. It is totally charming! Young Calpurnia is a budding naturalist who is living in a time when girls are expected to learn home making skills not the scientific method. The interplay between Calpurnia, her mother and her biologist grandfather is wonderful. My granddaughter (age 13) loved the book, her mother loved the book and I love the book. I would recommend it to anyone.
I bought this book to read to my three-and-a-half-year-old but it definitely is for a little bit older child possibly 5. It's a very interesting story and one that I think young girls would be interested in although some of the language is a bit dated and even I have to skip over some words because I have no idea what they mean or have to guess due to context and even then I sometimes make things up for my child. Not sure if you can get away with that for a five-year-old? I think it has a strong message and goes a long way to immerse the reader in the time. My child was completely confused as to why they didn't have electricity!? That's something that can engage your child into a more meaningful discussion about how times have changed. And also on how many things have stayed consistent. It's a good read.
A delicious book to savor. I am a pediatrician with a special interest in children's literature and this book will definitely go on my list of books to recommend for adolescent girls. I loved reading it. The voice of the calpurnia is so pleasant to read. I laughed and even got teary. Bravo!!
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is a refreshing tale of a 12 year old girl in Texas at the turn of the 19th century and the head of the industrial age. Her life is filled with avoiding her mother's handy work projects, hiding from her 6 brothers, and going on short scientific expedition with her grandfather to the nearby river. With her grandfather by her side and a couple of brothers in tow, Calpurnia finds herself in one amazing adventure packed summer.

Calpurnia's curious mind is constantly getting her in trouble just like me. I can't count how many times that my own actions has gotten me in trouble. When I read the book, her emotions seep into me as if they were my own. When she finishes an experiment, I feel excited. When she is sent to bed without dinner, I feel hungry. When I finish the book, I want to pick it back up and read it all over again. I identify with Calpurnia so deeply, it's like she my sister--just she's in a book.
Assigned read for homeschool co-op and we truly enjoyed this one.
Off to buy the second one at the request of my 11yo sons.
I do recommend this set.
While they could read it themselves if they wished- we chose to read this book together for bedtime and will do the same with the second book.
Whether you are 8 or 80 or somewhere in between I urge you to read this book. Calpurnia Tate is an inquisitive girl on the brink of adolescence at the turn of the 20th century. The evolution in the title refers to her special, scientific-based relationship with her wealthy, cantankerous grandfather, a friend of Charles Darwin. The natural wonders they discover on daily walks around their Texas farm endow Calpurnia with love for even the smallest living creatures. Calpurnia's other evolution, the internal struggle she faces as the only daughter in a family of six, boisterous sons, reminds us that girls were still destined to be wives and mothers at that time. College will be denied her even though Calpurnia longs for higher education and the family has the means to send her. She chafes against her mother's efforts to teach her to cook and sew. The struggle for her to coax an edible pie out of flour and apples is epic.
