The Testimony of Taliesin Jones Rhidian Brook 9780142001578 Books
I recently finished The Aftermath by Rhidian Brook, and purchased this book on the strength of that novel, which was extraordinary. This book I didn't like nearly as much. For me, I really never became absorbed in the story. I did like Taliesin Jones. He was a very well drawn character and I enjoyed his thought processes and how he comes to terms about his parents pending divorce.., how he comes to see the failings of his father in regards to his mother and their marriage. However, the whole child-comes-of-age genre has been done too often for me to really enjoy the novel. Brook is a wonderfully talented writer, but I just couldn't overcome the boredom of this story. I read half of the book and just skimmed through the rest. It wouldn't put me off trying another of his titles though.Tags : The Testimony of Taliesin Jones [Rhidian Brook] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. The Testimony of Taliesin Jones Rhidian Brook 9780142001578 Books Reviews
This is a simply plotted book. Introspective and articulate Taliesin Jones is dealing with his parents' separation, the imminent ending of his "childhood", and questions of faith and belief, introduced in part through a passing connection to faith healing. This is partly a character study, partly a reflection on the nature of "belief", and partly a portrait of a small Welsh community. If you think of a more earnest, less explicitly funny, less lyrical, but equally affectionate prose version of Dylan Thomas's "Under Milkwood", you'll be on the right track. Calm and well-crafted, and full of subtle insight and wry humor, this is a gentle and thoughtful book for a bit of quiet reading.
