I really loved this series of the three original Shannara books, The Sword, The Elfstones and The Wishsong. I read them when I was in high school for the first time. I enjoyed them just as much this time. I always get to the end and cannot decide which in this series is my favorite. That being said, The Wishsong is another wonderful dimension to the series. Terry Brooks does a wonderful job at unfolding the events in way that makes you want to keep turning the pages. The journey is an adventure you'll not soon forget. I know that some criticism comes from the parallels people draw from Tolkein, but really take the time to read Brooks. There are some parallels, but he does develop a wonderful and imaginative story that is all his own work and one I really loved. Great characters, he develops wonderful heroes and heroines that you can believe in.Tags : The Wishsong of Shannara (The Shannara Series) [Terry Brooks] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Terry Brooks,The Wishsong of Shannara (The Shannara Series),Time Warner Books Uk,1857231325,Fantasy
The Wishsong of Shannara The Shannara Series Terry Brooks 9781857231328 Books Reviews
Great read. Great characters. Great style. A must read. The only reason it has four and not five stars is that there seemed to be room for a bigger underlying message but there wasn't. Just a good old PG-13 fantasy read.
I really enjoyed this book. I found it to be very clever and exciting. It may be true that Mr. Brooks books have similar story lines or seemingly recycled characters, but I find that he captures my imagination each time, despite this. His books work for me because they are good against evil, and he sends his characters on impossible missions and they overcome through self-sacrifice and love. Characters are developed thoroughly and the story is fast paced. There is enough romance, danger, mystery and magic to keep me re-reading this book every couple of years, along with all of the other Terry Brooks books I own.
I read "THe Elfstones of Shanarra" over 20 years ago. When the "Chronicles of Shannara" came out on MTV I watched them and said to myself, "I don't remember this."
So I decided to reread Elfstones and found it just as exciting as the first time, since I had forgotten much of the detail.
It is a great starter book with which to start reading the series.
Be sure to go ahead and read "The Wishsong of Shannara" in which you will meet Wil's children. I just reread that and it is even better.
From that point you can fly anywhere. Go back to "Sword" go ahead to "Scions" or even back to "Genesis" (dare you go back to "Running with the Demon).
Classic, I'm re-reading entire Shannara series. You can wiki the entire series and start with "The Word and the Void", which begins in pre apocalyptic America and work you way through to the "current" time. Read the books! The MTV Shannara series butchered the storyline, The books are 1000x better.
Overall a well-written conclusion to the original trilogy, although it lackS Brook's usual wrap-up of the post-drama character's lives. I believe he was already setting the stage for the next set, The Scions of Shannara. Highly recommended to all Shannara fans, and if you have read the two prequel sets, The Word and the Void and the Children of Armageddon trilogies, go back to the origins of the entire world created by Brooks, written some twenty-five years prior to those volumes, for the opening of the world of Shannara set up by those more recent works. It is very interesting to see the evolution of Brook's writing style. I highly recommend the 35th Anniversary Annotated issue of the Sword of Shannara, the book that started it all, for both new and previous readers.
After "Elfstones" I was greatly looking forward to "Wishsong". Wow was I disappointed. This book feels like the author just added sentence after sentence to stuff pages. Characters' dialog goes on and on restating the same thing over and over....This one slogs along with almost no surprises and a completely predictable plot. I found myself skimming ahead. It's been a long time since I've done that...determined just to get it over. Go back and read Elfstones again, and skip this one.
Another excellent Shannara book by Terry Brooks. Brin and Jair Ohmsford, children of Wil Ohmsford and the Rover girl, Eretria, are young adults with the power of the Elfstones that Wil carried on his journey to help Amberle Elessedil find the Bloodfire and restore the Ellcrys and the Forbidding that held the demons sealed up from the old world, transformed into a different power, that of the Wishsong. For Brin, it eventually becomes something that is almost terrifying as she travels with the Druid, Allanon and the Highlander prince, Rone Leah, to destroy an evil book called the Ildatch. For Jair it becomes a means to help his companions on a quest that he had not known he was to undertake, to save Brin from herself and her wishsong. Traveling companions that neither of them could foresee join them along the way, and both question whether they are capable of the tasks assigned them. A must read for any fantasy fan!
