Sarah Andrews writes novels to teach archaeology to her readers. Her stories are usually just the framework to teach a specific area of archaeology. In this case she is teaching about a little known subjet: Antarctica. Her heroine is no her series heroine Em Hansen, although Em is mentioned a couple times in the book. Rather it is about a Climatologist who has wanted to work in Antarctica since she was seven years old. She earns funding to go to Antarctica under her Doctorate Professor's guidance, but finds he has been whisked off the continent just hours before her arrival--an she must leave within days.Disappointed by the dismissal and intrigued by the circumstances of her Mentor's banishment back to Hawaii, she uses the time she has before she is to leave to become acquainted with as many people as possible, and learn as much as she can about the circumstances around the murder her professor is accused of committing.
Short one person on their various teams because of the professor's removal, each group begs for our heroine's "substitution" to their study. She gratefully agrees to fill in the empty spots in each effort, and ends up traveling to various stations on the continent that are under study. Doing this she also gathers information about the murdered man and the circumstances around his death.
Each station is fully described, what it is there for and how it functions such as the communications array on Black Island, the Shackleton shack which is a historical landmark, the Penguin reserve, the bleak canyons where snow cores are gathered to study ancient weather conditions. The reader learned much they didn't know about our southern continent, its weather and history while enjoying the interesing and specialization people and circumstances the scientific community in Antarctica as well as a very compelling mystery, and likable heroine. There is also a several romantic subplots to spice up the intrique.
Anyone interested in Antarctica, Archaeology, scientific discovery, history, unique mysteries, or subtle love stories will enjoy "In Cold Pursuit" by Sarah Andrews.

I was looking for a good adventure book and this qualified. Adventure, plausibility, and female heroine all in one.
I like books with happy endings.
Found this author this summer at a motel bookshelf. (Borrow a book and return it to another motel.) I love books that have a tight mystery and teach me something!
Ordered for a gift.
I was on the Ice when Sarah was researching the book and it was fun to read about the old hell hole.
Her recreation of MacTown is fairly accurate though hardly captures the feel of the place, the story moves along decently though seems to be looking for its own footing as it slips and slides around the town and surrounding areas. Knowing the layout of the town and most of the people her characters were based on makes it hard for me to be balanced because I kept recalling too much but if you are a fan of Em Hansen this is not the best novel but if you dream of Antarctica and the fools who venture so far away then this is a rather honest vision of the closeness and distance that some people find there and an accurate depiction of some of those who could never be called normal anywhere else.
The research and Antartic information is wonderful. And the preachiness (global warming being the theme here) not too bad, quite bearable. But do we really need a new heroine who is intelligent, beautiful, resourceful, and has all kinds of unusual knowledge of unusual subjects, like driving heavy equipment amd lots else?? Give me Em Hansen back (PLEASE!!!), who has only OK looks, is very intelligent, and specializes in various and interesting geological fields, like oil exploration and forensic geology. People don't seem to fall all over themselves to help her. She's quite extraordinary enough, but not nearly so enviably so as this heroine, whose name is escaping me right now. Nevertheless, the book was good enough reading, lots of good info re ice and the like, I'll buy the next one no matter what, but really hope it's an Em Hansen.
I enjoyed this book for its evocation of Antarctica. I learned quite a lot about the challenges of living and working in a very hostile climate. Generally I've liked Sarah Andrews other books because of the insight she provides into various aspects of science, often in interesting surroundings, and usually wrapped up in an entertaining, thoughtful plot.
My reservation about this book is that the author's tendency generally to use her books as a soapbox to present a rather didactic argument reached a level I found really intrusive. Maybe she just isn't a good enough writer to present her "case" without making the reader feel they are being lectured to. I like books that are connected to the "real world" in some important way, but I value them most when they expose me to an argument without me feeling that I'm being recruited to a particular point of view.
I also find it odd that the book is touted as an "Em Hansen Mystery" when Em Hansen is merely the originator of a couple of emails. Still, if you want to learn something about Antarctica, the people who work there and the work they do, this is a worthwhile read.
